Hardships & Misadventures Of The Inland Seas

Book Design

Throughout history, the Great Lakes have been known for unpredictable currents, towering waves, and deadly storms. This has led to the construction of hundreds of lighthouses on their shores and on isolated navigational hazards miles from land. This publication celebrates three of these lighthouses themselves as feats of engineering and important historical structures. Inspired by the romanticization of lighthouses in America, this publication contains personal accounts of life at the lighthouses as well as tales of unfortunate tragedies that have occurred on the lakes.

  • “Conduct a rigorous investigation of the lighthouse(s) in your region / country and uncover their compelling stories. From your research establish a narrative that appropriately celebrates / commemorates / honours your chosen building(s).” - ISTD 2022

  • Being from Wisconsin, the Great Lakes are very important to me. Through my research, I discovered and focused on extremely remote and isolated lighthouses.

  • A massive, U.S. ledger sized book, The Hardships and Misadventures of the Inland Seas. The very structure of each page has been altered by its corresponding lake and lighthouse height resulting in three unique sections. The timeline of each lighthouse is explained while telling the, often tragic, stories of life on the lakes.
